Every disciple of Christ should develop the discipline of a daily walk with God. Right?!? I know it's an elementary practice, but we really need to find success in this area. There really is no substitute for our daily time of Bible reading.
Often, this is understood as a duty that proves our spirituality, and we measure ourselves and others by it. But our time in God's Word is so much more than a duty; it's a devotion that provides for our spiritual success. A spiritual person is one who has denied his flesh and is yielded to the Spirit. Our time in the Bible is a time when we can prepare and equip ourselves by hearing the Father's voice.
One difficulty that many face is what to read. The Bible with its 66 books can often seem to be daunting. Where do I start? Where do I go from there? What do I need to read right now? What would help me most? These are all good questions.
Allow me to introduce you to a resource that I have found to be helpful on a personal basis. YouVersion. YouVersion is a Bible program that probably many of us have downloaded to our phones or tablets. It is a Bible App with many features that you probably haven't taken advantage of:
- Bible Reading Plans - These plans range in length from a few days to a whole year. They are both topical and set by book. In fact, you can read multiple plans at the same time. These plans have been a blessing to me because they have given me much flexibility and personalization.
- Highlighting and Note Taking - As you read, you can easily highlight a verse that stands out to you and even add notes. I have found this is a great way to record what God has spoken to me, and reference it later.
- Friends - Probably one of the least utilized feature of YouVersion is its social networking ability. This may seem unnecessary, but it really provides an element of accountability. You can have a friend watch for your daily reading and even challenge others to keep at it. It also allows you to see how God is leading and moving your friends. Often, I have started a reading plan just because I've been encouraged by the response of one of my friends.
What about you? Is this a tool that would help you? Would you like me to be your friend on the APP? If so, you can connect with me by searching for PastorJoe@GraceBaptistPhilly.com.
